When it comes to a coffee grinder, Baratza is one name that easily comes up into our mind. Baratza’s coffee grinders are preferred by many coffee lovers because they speak about real quality and durability. Quite recently, the company has just released a new coffee grinder model, which is named Baratza Sette. Unlike the other previous models, Baratza Sette has been equipped with a new design and new technologies. In the following article, we are going to compare this new Baratza Sette to one of Baratza’s best-selling models, Baratza Virtuoso. Should you get Baratza Virtuoso or Baratza Sette?
The new Sette is very different compared to the Virtuoso. Baratza Virtuoso features 40 mm conical burrs in a typical top-to-bottom design. You add the coffee beans on the top of the device, and the ground coffee will be collected at the bottom. Baratza Virtuoso also features sculptured metal top and base, both of which creating such an elegant image. The front-mounted pulse button allows grinding directly into an espresso filter basket. Baratza Virtuoso is powered by a DC motor that stays cool in extended grinding. The gear speed limiters slow the burrs to ensure smooth and even bean feeding, at the same time reducing noise, heat, and static electricity buildup.
However, Baratza Sette has undergone a massive transformation. It certainly looks more modern and contemporary. The black housing and metallic parts look classy and elegant. The grinding gear has been moved to the back of the burrs instead of underneath. This design enables you to grind straight from the hopper into whatever brewer that you choose. This design, besides being more flexible, also makes the machine much easier to clean. There is a built-in convertible holder to keep your portafilter, bin, or brewer in place. Finally, there are digital controls for grind time settings and a grind adjustment that enables you to grind from espresso to manual brew with precision. (See also : Baratza Virtuoso Vs Preciso)
Baratza Virtuoso is indeed an excellent grinder. It performs very well. It consistently delivers great output quality. It is also very durable, able to last for a long time. However, compared to the Sette, it is indeed slower at 3.5g/sec, and it can’t deliver fine ground coffee as fine as the Sette.
On the other hand, Baratza Sette is able to work faster, with grind speeds up to 5.5g/sec. The output quality is also awesome and consistent. Unfortunately, some users have said that the Sette is not very reliable. The motor can fail within a few months. On the good side, the customer service is very nice and chances are you can get a replacement through the warranty.
