Both Cappuccino and Latte are made from espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk. However, they use different amounts. Cappuccino makes use of the three ingredients in an equal ratio. Cappuccino is made from 1/3 part espresso, 1/3 part steamed milk, and 1/3 part foamed milk. As you can see, in Cappuccino, the espresso is toned down with the milk, but the flavor of the coffee is still pretty strong and noticeable. The top is layered with an airy, thick layer of foamed milk. On the other hand, Latte is made from 1/6 part espresso, 4/6 part steamed milk, and 1/6 part foamed milk. Latte contains a lot of milk, so you can say that Latte is actually a milk-based drink that features some coffee. It is topped with a thin layer of foamed milk. (Read also: Cappuccino Vs Mocha)
Cappuccino delivers a pretty strong coffee flavor, mixed together with the sweetness of milk. The thick top layer of foamed milk makes it somehow creamy. On the other hand, the coffee flavor of Latte is much more subtle. The texture of the drink is a little bit creamier due to the large amount of milk used.
While indeed any drink can be served in any way that the maker prefers, Cappuccino is normally served in a glass, placed on a saucer with a napkin. Meanwhile, Latte is usually served in a porcelain cup which has better heat retention.
Cappuccino originates in Italy. It acquired its name from the Capuchin friars; the color of the drink is similar to the color of the Capuchin robe. On the other hand, Latte comes from America. The word ‘latte’ actually means ‘milk’ in Italian, thus ‘caffe latte’ refers to ‘coffee and milk’.
